Losing weight tends to be a touchy subject, one that is dominated by “I can’t” or “it’s too hard”. While it is true that weight loss requires dedication and commitment, it is certainly possible to achieve your goals. Exercise is a core component, but weight loss is about more than cardio. There are some simple things that you can do that will not only help to reduce your weight, but also improve other aspects of your life. Here are the 5 best tips for losing weight:

 

Get More Sleep

Poor sleep can impact cognitive function and decision making. This can lead you to make poor dietary choices and negatively influence your weight loss goals. Sleep deprivation can also release hormones into your body that make you feel hungrier and that, in turn, encourage you to overeat. 

 

It’s recommended that adults between 18 and 64 years of age get 7-9 hours of sleep each night.  This sounds nice in theory, but many of us are so bogged down by work, family, and other obligations that this amount of sleep seems something to aspire to rather than a realistic outcome.  In any case, making more time for rest will help you to recover from hard workouts, even if you do not make it to the 7-9 hour mark. 

 

Stay Hydrated

Drinking water before meals can make you feel less hungry, which will reduce the amount of food you eat. In fact, drinking cold water can help burn calories and keep your kidneys working properly so that your body stores less fat.    

 

What this really means is that you should be getting plenty of water so that your body can do its job efficiently and effectively. You should be getting around eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily. The number should be even higher if you are very active.

 

Reduce Stress

The main issue with stress and bodyweight is that it can cause overeating. Stress raises the level of cortisol in your body which causes your blood sugar to drop. This not only makes you hungry, but creates a desire for sugary and fatty foods. Fortunately, one of the best ways to reduce stress is by exercising, which you might be doing already. 

 

Diet

You may have been hoping that I wasn’t going to get on a soapbox and give a sermon about how you have to clean up your diet to lose weight, so I’ll keep it short and sweet. Cutting just 500 calories out of your diet per day is all you need to do to get your body started down the path towards weight loss—that’s it.  Start slowly by taking a few calories out of each meal - cutting out a soda here and there - and you’re all set. 

 

Support System

Following tips 1-4 will surely help you lose bodyweight, but without a support system your progress may be short-lived.
